Steps to convert M4B to MP3

M4BConvert runs entirely in your browser. No software to install, no account to create, and no file size limit imposed by us. Converting an M4B audiobook to MP3 takes a few clicks and runs on your own device using WebAssembly-powered FFmpeg.

1
Drop your M4B file

Drag and drop your M4B audiobook file into the drop zone above, or click to browse your device. Files of any size are supported, large audiobooks of several gigabytes work the same as small ones.

2
Choose Chapters or Single File mode

Chapters mode splits the M4B into individual MP3 files (one per chapter), named after the chapter titles embedded in the audiobook. This is the most common choice and works well for devices that don't support the M4B container. Single File mode converts the entire audiobook into one MP3, useful when you want to keep everything in a single track.

3
Select your MP3 quality

Pick a bitrate from the Quality dropdown. 128 kbps is fine for speech and keeps file sizes small. 192 kbps is a good balance for most audiobooks. 320 kbps gives the best quality but produces larger files. Because M4B uses AAC encoding, converting to MP3 involves a re-encode... choosing a higher bitrate minimises any quality difference.

4
Click Start and download

Hit the Start button and watch the live log as each chapter is processed. When conversion is complete, your MP3 files will be bundled into a ZIP and downloaded directly to your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored anywhere, the process happens entirely in your browser.

5
Optional: edit chapters before converting

The chapter editor in the centre panel lets you rename tracks, adjust start and end times, reorder chapters, or add new split points before you convert. This is useful if the M4B file has no chapter markers, or if you want to trim a chapter or split a long one in two.

Why convert M4B to MP3

M4B is a great format for audiobooks as it supports chapters, bookmarks, and cover art natively. But it is not universally supported. MP3 is the most widely compatible audio format in existence and plays on virtually every device and app ever made. Converting your M4B audiobook to MP3 is the right move when:

Your device or app doesn't support M4B playback, common with older MP3 players, many car stereo systems, Android media apps that don't recognise the container, and some smart speakers. You want to share specific chapters with someone without requiring them to have an audiobook app. You're archiving your audiobook library in a format that will still be readable in twenty years without worrying about codec support.

If you only need compatibility with Apple devices and apps, the M4B to M4A converter is a better choice as it produces a lossless stream copy with no re-encoding, so audio quality is identical to the source.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting M4B to MP3 reduce audio quality?

Yes, marginally. M4B uses AAC encoding and MP3 uses its own codec, so the conversion requires a re-encode rather than a stream copy. For spoken word content like audiobooks, the difference is essentially inaudible at 128 kbps or above. If lossless conversion is a priority, use the M4B to M4A converter instead.

Can I split an M4B audiobook into separate chapter MP3 files?

Yes! that's what Chapters mode is for. Each chapter embedded in the M4B file becomes its own numbered MP3 file, named after the chapter title. All files are delivered in a single ZIP download.

What if my M4B file has no chapters?

Switch to Single File mode to convert the whole audiobook into one MP3. You can also add chapter split points manually in the chapter editor before converting, which gives you full control over where each MP3 track begins and ends.

Is there a file size limit?

We don't impose one. The practical limit is your device's available RAM and storage. For very large files (over 1 GB), enabling Low-RAM mode is recommended as it streams data to disk rather than holding everything in memory, which prevents the browser tab from running out of memory mid-conversion.

How long does M4B to MP3 conversion take?

A typical one-hour audiobook takes one to three minutes on a modern laptop. Enabling Turbo mode runs multiple encoding threads in parallel, which can cut conversion time significantly for long audiobooks with many chapters. Conversion speed depends on your processor, and mobile devices will be slower than desktops.

Is my audiobook file private?

Completely. Your M4B file never leaves your device. All processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly. We have no server that receives, stores, or touches your audio at any point.

Which browsers are supported?

Chrome and Edge work best and are recommended. Firefox is supported. Safari on macOS works for most files, though very large audiobooks may hit memory limits sooner than on Chromium-based browsers. Mobile browsers are supported but conversion will be slower due to processor constraints.
